What is the Dendrite Racing Project?
Our goal is simple - bring together people who love nordic ski racing and training.
Our goal is simple - bring together people who love nordic ski racing and training.
Who We Are
The Dendrite Racing Project is a group of individuals who come together from geographically dispersed locations to connect – both online and in-person – to form a nordic ski team. Under the umbrella of SNOW, the Dendrite Racing Project aims to create a space where people who love the sport of cross-country skiing can connect, share their stories, and ultimately meet up at events to race and train as teammates.
The Dendrite Racing Project Mission
Our mission is to build a community centered around a love of lifelong fitness, training, and racing that is both geographically distributed and tight-knit. For many, the ability to be a member of a nordic ski team is relatively accessible throughout high school and college. While a love for racing and the sport rarely fade with graduation, opportunities to be a part of a ski team drastically dissipate for those not pursuing professional or semi-professional racing careers. The Dendrite Racing Project aims to provide a space for individuals to connect who want to continue their pursuit of nordic ski training and racing wherever life takes them.
Origins – Inspiration for the project founder Sam Wiswell
I have had the immense privilege of spending much of my life nordic ski racing and training. It is an activity that has fostered some of my most meaningful and longest-lasting friendships while also facilitating some of the most fantastic and memorable moments of my life. In the waning moments of my time ski racing in college, pipe dreams of continuing this pursuit via marathon and citizens racing arose. Further discussion with teammates and fellow athletes in USCSA revealed their similar aspirations. Unfortunately, after college racing, there are very few options to remain in a structured team environment. As I have pursued different journeys in my life, I have found others who are passionate about continuing to ski race and train. We are spread across the globe like the radiating arms of a snowflake crystallizing in a winter storm. While we are spread far, there is a deep connection to the sport and community that remains with us. While I have been to a few ski races alone since graduating from college, I have found the most fulfillment where I have been able to connect with teammates old and new. Hearing this echoed from many others, I have made a commitment to stretch the idea of what a team can look like and how to engage those who are not served by a traditional ski team. It is my hope we can foster an environment where people can continue to feel like a part of the nordic ski community and pursue their passion for ski racing through the formation and evolution of the Dendrite Racing Project.

For Race Weekends
For Camps and Other Events
For these types of events, a camp fee that includes lodging, food and other expenses will be determined by the coordinator/members organizing the event. For Race Weekends
- Lodging
- 60 days plus before the event – coordinator reaches out to members to see who is interest. Members who wish to participate in shared lodging reach out to express interest.
- ~ 40 Days out from event – coordinator will reach out again to confirm interest and find potential lodging to get a cost estimate.
- 30 Days to Event – Final add/drop date for lodging
- The coordinator will do their best to touch base with folks to confirm they are in or out.
- Failure to drop out before this cutoff will result in you being responsible for your portion of lodging fees regardless if you attend or not.
- Transport
- Generally on your own – carpooling encouraged when there is an option.
- Food
- Coordinated in the week leading up to the event or on-site. A participant that is not the primary coordinator is encouraged to take on this task.
- Race Fees/Registration
- On your own – may pursue team rates where available.

- Waxing
- When available, a SNOW wax box and waxing equipment will be at the event. Alternatives will likely be considered including BNS/professional race day wax services or getting your skis race waxed at your local shop.

Implementing Our Vision
The winter of 2019-2020 is the first season of implementing the Dendrite Racing Project. That said, we are very much in a growing phase with opportunities constantly evolving. There is a lot of space for excited members to contribute and shape how this racing project will work.
At the moment, we have a Facebook Group where we are posting race opportunities that our members are attending. A general training plan is also available to all SNOW members.
Stay Tuned For ….
Beginning this winter the Dendrite Racing Project will host races, camps, and meetups using the platform of SNOW. While some of these events/races will be hosted in conjunction with the University of Wyoming and other branches of the SNOW network, others will be completely independent. Events will include the Alley Loop and the American Birkebiner among many others!
